This ain't cool
Even though I got zero bonus this year (i.e. pay cut, basically), I have been working 12 hours a day for the past two weeks. Coupled with an hour commute either way, my life is not remotely fun right now. I am going to the UK to see my folks next week, and I'm kind of worried about that too. I haven't seen them for three years and my Mum has had a lot of problems during that time and sounded absolutely depressed last time I spoke to her on the phone. Woe is me. I guess this is what LJ is all about, huh. In other news, I bought an iPhone and have completed TWEWY to about 90% status all round. Work still sucks, though.

Yep, no bonus sucks. Same thing is happening to our company when performance reviews start in a couple of months. With my almost ten years at this company, this is the second time that this has happened. At least I can afford gas now.

Hang in there, it'll get better. Do you at least get paid overtime?

Doubt it. There aren't many companies that what would allow someone to work 20 extra hours a week and pay overtime AND potentially get a bonus.
Sucks to hear you're getting the occupational shaft.
Hopefully the holidays lift that spirit a little.

It's a sad state of affairs basically.
If you're a proper firm employee, as opposed to a contract worker, you get your fixed annual salary and zero overtime. Bonuses would reflect overtime I guess, but this year there is no bonus, so whatever. And no unions, of course.

Sorry to hear about the holidays not being so fun for you. :(

Which iPhone plan did you get and how is your billing set up? I've decided to pick one up in Japan, and wanna see how various people are handling theirs.

There are no "plans" like AT&T. White Plan plus scaled packet plan. You pay for how much you talk and the data plan is like 6000 yen max.

www.softbank.jp answers all, sir.

What JP said.
The data plan is a scaling fee based on packets used. Min is 1000 yen, max is 5500 yen. There's also a +300 yen tax for being on an iPhone or something. For the voice you have white plan be default, which means free calls to other softbank phones from 1am to 9pm. Docomo should be selling iPhone next year sometime, but I don't know the details.

I was actually wondering if you had to pay full price for the phone right off the bat or not. Everyone's different in that regard. But thanks. It's like ¥80000 right?

Selling iPhones at work is a huge headache for me. Actually, I hate dealing with cellphones in general.

Paid for mine up front. 60,800.
You can pay over a plan of 2,500+ a month for 2 years or something like that, but they said up front was cheapest so I did that.

With a one year visa and no Japanese credit card, you will be paying for the phone upfront.

I'll have a two-year visa, and Waseda offers its own CCs that any student of theirs that isn't a 1-year can get. I wonder if it would be worth waiting for that, and perhaps even the next revision... maybe I should hold off for a few months.

Are your parents near or around London?

I just got an iPhone too, loving it! I originally went for a Blackberry Storm but I didn't get on with that too well, plus I use a mac anyway I have no idea what I was thinking when I made that decision.

I feel your pain! Company recently declared no bonus and no increment/salary adjustment this year, so after taking inflation into account I'll be poorer next year than this :(

(really sucks too, cos I've gotten 3-4 months bonus in the last 3 years here).

And this isn't the "bonus" in a western sense; this is the "it's 20% of your agreed-to salary, but we'll call it a bonus so we can shirk if the market looks sketchy"-bonus, am I right?

I fucking hate that lame weak sauce.
