LUMINES
I finally reached level 100 in Lumines and unlocked the last challenge mode skin, Lights. It's semi-anti-climactic as the blocks are back to the standard orange/white combination, and the background isn't that amazing. I don't think the musics particularly high bitrate either. I was surprised to hear a fair bit of noise coming through on the sample, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't my headphones. I don't know if I'll ever beat the VS mode, but I might give it a bit more time to keep my skills warmed up for human VS games. It's easily one of the best puzzle games I've played, but I think it could have done with a little more polish in some places. The CPU VS mode is just brutal, and it would be nice to be able to create playlists of your favourite skins. Perhaps we will see a sequel in the future. I hope there is an official soundtrack release. Aside from the "big tracks" (by Mondo Grosso and Eri Nobuchika), most of the other tracks are fantastic - most musical genres are covered in a very convincing manner.

DQVIII
I only managed to play for a few hours before Christmas, but this weekend I've put a lot more time into it. At my current 22 hour point, I've made the following (spoiler free) progress:

The X is where I'm at now, the game starts at the point just east of there. I followed the path down to the port on the south coast of the first landmass, then ventured round the southern land before teleporting back to the port and making my way northwest to my current location.

I can see it's going to be a massively long game, as the story is really only just kicking into gear. I'm very impressed with how compelling the story is, and how all the characters have proper motivation. I guess it's quite novel coming from a mostly FF background. The levelling system is archaic, but the battles are fun and it's never too easy, at least not at the pace I'm playing. The story is told with cartoon-like event sequences, always very entertaining. There's lots of humour and a fair share of tragedy too.

The big draw is the exploration and landscapes. The PS2 is almost five years old, but this game is blowing me away. When you make it to the top of a hill and you look out over the next valley, knowing that you can explore everything you can see, you get a fantastic buzz. All the overworld is streamed, so you never have to wait for loading apart from exiting battles, and entering towns/dungeons. Exiting battles is the biggest pain in terms of loading times. The random battles are usually loaded in before they start, so you enter the battles instantly, but when you finish a battle, you have to wait for a noticeable few seconds before you can get back to exploring. Towns and dungeons aren't so bad because it's an expected pause while you get your breath back from the overworld excitement.

I've strayed away from using FAQs so far, and I'm hoping it will stay like that for the entire game. I'm sure I'll miss some stuff, but I know from experience that once I start using a FAQ, I can't help myself from using it at every available opportunity, and then there is the possibility for spoilers and all sorts of stuff. I'll just keep myself in the dark for this one, I think.

I dunno if used ones are even cheap yet. 6400 seems to be around the cheapest at the moment. Still, the used sales are killing sales of the new product - I can understand why companies tried to stop 2nd hand games sales back in the 90s.

This new DQ sounds awesome. I hadn't heard anything about it until your post here. That's really cool.

Which skills are you developing for your characters? I'm not very far in the game, just finished the castle trying to activate the ship then I got distracted by other games. The DQ8 guidebook is pretty informative and relatively spoiler-free, it tells you what skills your characters will learn so you don't waste skill points, but still its hard to decide because not all weapon types are available at certain points in the game. More importantly though, it has recipes for synthesizing, very useful to make weapons and stuff, like Jessica's bunny outfit ^^

So far I've been taking the hero (Jonny) down the Boomerang route, Yangus has a scythe, Jessica using whip (ooh yeah) and Kukule using bow. I'm building up their 5th (personality?) skill pretty evenly too.

I figured out the bunny head strap recipe without a guide, so the rest should be ok. I am enjoying playing it totally without a guide though - it makes me feel better about my Japanese ability ;) I guess I'm just a little behind where you stopped. I just got to the castle now.

When you say "finished the castle", do you mean before or after finding the harp - methinks this part might annoy me a little ;)

ah, its right after the fairy lady breaking her harp and I have to find a new one for her, First time I walked in there my party got wiped out and it took a little while to level up just so they could progress. I think you are probably ahead of me. I have a problem of deciding what skills to level for Jessica, same as you, I've been leveling her whip, but her staff skills is very important for magic, and her 5th skill (sexiness, I believe) is probably the coolest looking of all skills.

I am at the exact same part as you. I have to find that bloody harp ;)
I believe イシュマウル is a guy though, even if he is quite feminine. So if my understanding of the magic levelling system is correct, Jessica is like a black mage and Kukule is like a white mage? Except they both have pretty decent combat skills too.

I walked out of that castle and had no idea where to go next, so I just left it there and started to play MGS3. I couldn't tell that the fairy was a girl or a guy, I just assumed since s/he plays a harp, it must be a girl, lol. In terms of magic, i think Jessica is kind of like a black mage, and both the hero and Kukule are kind of like paladins, but Kukule seems to gain better white magic at earlier levels. There isn't much we can do about what spells we learn, but the reason why its good to level staff skills is both Jessica and Kukule get MP+ bonus when they are equipped with staff at higher levels, especially Jessica, she gets MP+100. Also, top level staff skill is magic refresh, which can also come in handy.

Figured it out eventually. The fairy guy gives you a really good hint but you have to understand it the right way. Took a while though.

Crap, so I probably have to go back to the castle to talk to it again, completely forgot what s/he said over a month ago (>.<)

Mostly playing MGS3 at the moment, still deciding what to do with GT4, it can't be played properly without the steering wheel and I don't have space for one...

very glad you're enjoying it, and okaerinasai back to Japan while I'm at it. I'm at around hour 95 and although I've beaten it, it's far... from over yet, which is all I'll say. The game keeps giving you challenges and plenty of things to do right up to the end, which is an impressive feat for such a large game.

STAY away from FAQs! you can always check back on what you missed when you're finished!

btw, did you ever get rid of that N64 stuff? =)

Nope. I think I'm gonna hold on to my stuff until we decide a course of action for our next living quarters. If we can get a big place, I'll probably hang on to it. "Big" in Japan is never going to be big though.

I wanna get into DQ8 but I think I'm gonna finish off DQ5 first. I got back into it yesterday after having played around 9 hours back when it first came out, and I did another 9 hour marathon last night while H was busy doing some freelance work. So now I'm 18 hours in, and my party is starting to get interesting. I won't spoil any of the key characters in my party, but I've got two friendly monsters traveling along -- a regular Slime and an uber-rare Metal Slime -- which is turning out to be really fun.

Great game. DQ8 is beautiful but I'm wondering if there's any way it'll be able to top DQ5 overall...

Edit: Reposted cause I said 'great game' like 42 times. Heheh.

I just got Lumines so its nice to know what awaits me. One thing I wish the game did was keep track of how long you played it. DQVIII sounds good.

The quality of DQVIII is evident in those pics. Interesting just how bright and... happy (?) it all looks though. Somehow I can't imagine any sudden moments of darkness in DQVIII like coming across a mutilated corpse in some dark corner of a dungeon, when the game's art style is like that. ;)

If you finished Lumines and are looking for a new abstract "pick up and play" experience, it might be time for BREAKQUEST - it came out in November and redefined the arkanoid genre and took it to the next level. Features moments of Rez-like abstract audio and vectors, and tons of creativity. I can't rave about it enough. This is my "Katamari Damancy", if you like. And only $20.

BreakQuest looks awesome. I'll give it a try when I get home. Thanks for that.

I understand your worries about the general atmosphere DQVIII's art style conveys, but it does invoke fear quite well too. There are a couple of pretty creepy dungeons that I've seen so far.

Wow. Ohisashiburi :)
I quit FF finally - might start WoW soon 'cos a few friends seem to be playing that. Not sure yet, it's pretty pricey.

Had no idea you have an LJ! I'll stick on my friendlist.

Me too. I love looking at the game a little bit too much in fact, I've tried to even avoid looking at screenshots or reading stuff about it, it makes the desire DQVIII factor go through the proverbial roof, and start thinking of scrounging enough cash to import it, even though it has been confirmed for here.

Have fun playing it for me, 'kay?
