Babel

Babel was such a depressing movie, not just from the content, but from the amount of time I'd spent watching it. All the characters were so poorly developed except for the two boys in the Middle East, and I find it ironic that the only people I felt sorry for in the end were those two. The way things tie together was too obvious - in particular the bus incident and the connection to the kids in the States. I guess after reading a synopsis that said everything is related, I started to think too hard from the very start of the movie, and nothing had chance to surprise me, but it was a great disappointment how shallow the characters were. The segment in Japan made very little sense, and Chieko's disability didn't seem like much of a hindrance at all. In the end, I wasn't sure what the real tragedy was supposed to be. Maybe feeling sorry for the two boys was the aim of the movie, maybe not. Everyone else got off way more luckily than they should have.

I actually caught part of this film in a taxi cab of call places, on my way to Newark Airport in New Jersey. Me and my parents were like "WTF!!!!" at the scene with the dentist and Chieko.

My wife wanted to see this, but I wasn't too sure. If it isn't that great, I'll pass and let her recieve the pain.

I think Chieko's real problem wasn't her deafness at all, but rather her.... nm spoiler lol. They just put that in for the communication barrier sake of the movie.

It's funny because while I agree with a lot that you wrote, like the poorly developed characters and what-not, but I still feel it was a great movie. Though, I wonder if they really tried to show these people are believeable and not hollywood icons, just to give it a more right at home impact.
